Student Health Alcohol & Drug Education (SHADE)

Campus Health provides a Student Health Alcohol & Drug Education (SHADE) program for students who are in violation of alcohol and marijuana policies at the UA. You may be referred to a class by the Dean of Students or Housing & Residential Life to fulfill your sanction; if you have a different referral source, please contact our office at 520-621-5700 prior to starting class.

SHADE Diversion Classes

Alcohol

In the alcohol SHADE class, students are taught:

  • How to estimate the number of standard drinks contained in the beverages they consume
  • How to calculate their own blood alcohol concentration
  • The impact of alcohol on social/emotional relationships and academic performance 
  • Strategies to plan consumption
  • How to recognize when it is time to stop drinking

Students also have the opportunity to request additional assistance through individual consultations with professional staff.

Marijuana

In the marijuana SHADE class, students are taught:

  • Pros and cons of cannabis consumption and over-consumption  
  • Strategies to plan  
  • Critical thinking skills regarding a sensation v. connection approach  
  • Impact of cannabis on social/emotional relationships and academic performance 
  • Effects of cannabis consumption on brain development  

Students also have the opportunity to request additional assistance through individual consultations with professional staff.

Class Fees

The following fees are posted to your Bursar's account:

  • $50 SHADE class fee
  • $50 fee for unexcused absence or no-show (if you are late or do not show up for class, you will need to reschedule and will be charged an additional $50)

Note: Students failing to complete eCHECKUP TO GO as spelled out in the memo from Campus Health will be assessed a $50 penalty if referred for an alcohol violation.

Class Location

SHADE classes are offered on Zoom and in-person. In-person classes are located on the 3rd floor of Campus Health in Room D304.
