The
Campus Health Service manages the Occupational Health portion of the
University's Animal Hazards Program. See complete policy document at: http://www.iacuc.arizona.edu/animalhazardsprogram.shtml.
When
Occupational Health receives a completed Risk Assessment Questionnaire
(RAQ) it is evaluated and assigned a category based on the type
of animal(s) you will be working with or around. The protocol
lists the recommended Basic Occ Health care for each category.
Individual risk factors and health issues are also assessed and factored in. You will be contacted after the review to let you know what follow up is needed, if any. Follow up visits are scheduled as needed to complete
immunization series, obtain titers, give boosters, address problems
or re-evaluate when job changes occur.
Occupational
Safety Designee (OSD)
Each
Principal Investigator (PI) is required to designate an OSD for
their lab. This can be the PI or someone else.
This individual, along with the Principal Investigator (PI), is
responsible for occupational safety concerns for their research
group (see Figure 1).
OSD's are also assigned for departments working with animals but
not on protocols, i.e., University Animal Care or Campus Agricultural
Center. The Animal Hazards Program office works closely with OSD's
to help staff stay in compliance with program requirements. Your OSD can assist you with questions, completing forms, and scheduling Animal Hazards appointments, etc.
