Building Spiritual Contentment

Spiritual health means different things to different people. However, there are some characteristics that are inherent in all forms of spirituality - a sense of purpose, awareness of inner strengths, a sense of connectedness, and faith. Spiritual health provides stability and hope in a world that is sometimes chaotic and threatening. It is a fundamental component of general well being.

People who feel comfortable in their spirituality have a basic set of values and beliefs about life. Commitment to these values and beliefs are reflected in their daily actions and speech. If you are interested in cultivating your own sense of spiritual health, the following is a list of suggestions:

  • Assess your values - What are the most important things you want out of life? How do you wish others to perceive you? What is your stance on moral and ethical issues? What makes you happy?
  • How do your current actions and behaviors measure up to your values? Make an effort to practice what you believe.
  • Surround yourself with people who uphold your same values.
  • Spiritual contentment begins with having a strong sense of self. Start exploring answers to questions such as - What is my purpose in life? What drives me? What depresses me? Where do I get the most fulfillment? What kind of person am I? What kind of person do I want to be?
  • Read literature that deals with issues of spirituality. These can be religious, non-religious or philosophical pieces.
  • Seek happiness by giving it to others - Assist those who are needy. Do something for a loved one. Be available to comfort and support someone who is hurting. Celebrate another's accomplishments.
  • Enroll in a class on philosophy or religion.
  • Search for activities that you find spiritually fulfilling - listening to music, writing, playing with a pet, exercising in nature, praying, etcetera.
  • Spend time talking with a spiritual counselor or with someone whose values you admire.
