Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown toenail results when the corner of the nail has grown into the surrounding tissue.

1. Soak your foot in warm soapy water for 15 - 20 minutes, 2 - 3 times a day.

2. After soaking the toe, try rolling the skin down under and away from the affected nail.  This may help promote return to normal nail growth.

3. If cotton packing has been placed under the nail, this should be removed every other day, unless otherwise directed by your provider.  The foot may be soaked with the cotton in place.  To replace the cotton after soaking, use a toothpick or nail file to push the cotton between the nail edge and the skin until it causes mild discomfort. This should help lift the nail from the surrounding skin.  Discomfort should gradually decrease over the next few days.  If you do not notice continued improvement, you should return to Campus Health Service.

4. When the nail is long enough to be trimmed, it should be cut straight across, not rounded (curved). This will help prevent further problems.

5. Wear sandals or loose-fitting shoes to remove pressure from the area.

6. Follow up with your provider in the time period that he/she designated.

7. If you have been given antibiotics, take them until they are gone or until otherwise instructed by your provider.
